The San Diego Chargers have one thing on their mind this year and that’s winning the Super Bowl. They seem to have all the ingredients to make a run at it with Philip Rivers starting to come into his own as an NFL quarterback. Rivers was spectacular last year putting up big numbers and leading the Chargers to the playoffs. Also, you must not forget about LaDainian Tomlinson who seems to be 100% healthy. He will team up with Darren Sproles to bolster one of the NFL’s top backfield duos. As for River’s receiving threats; Vincent Jackson has emerged as a big play threat and there is the competent, steady tight end Antonio Gates.

Defensively, the Chargers should be better than last year with the return of Shawne Merriman. His pass rushing ability should help take some of the heat off a secondary that was suspect a year ago. However, it can’t be overlooked that this defense even without Merriman was abused regularly last year. If they have intentions of making it to the big game, they have got to be better on this side of the football. The offense is in place, the defense has to step up their game.

As for the Oakland Raiders, a whirlwind of question marks surrounds this team. The quarterback situation is completely unstable. JaMarcus Russell has yet to prove himself as a quality signal caller. The offensive line has been awful and unable to protect the quarterback or open up running lanes for Darren McFadden. At wide receiver, the Raiders don’t have any proven threats, which is another reason why Russell has struggled. This offense needs everyone to elevate their game in order to stay in this ball game.

The Oakland defense in recent years has been very poor against the run. That could spell a lot of trouble against a team like the Chargers who has LaDainian Tomlinson pounding the rock. If Oakland can’t stop the run, they are in for a long night. I think the Chargers will overmatch this Raider club and win the game with relative ease. Odds makers have installed the Chargers as 10 point favorites. This line has jumped around a lot since it first opened a few weeks ago. In fact, the Chargers were minus 7 at one point at sports books in Las Vegas and offshore.
