Jerry Jones Makes Bold George Pickens Statement amid Rumors Around WR's Cowboys Future

Timothy RappMar 31, 2026

The Dallas Cowboys used the franchise tag on George Pickens this offseason, though team owner Jerry Jones indicated Tuesday that a long-term extension is still the goal.

"The franchise tag has an automatic time frame on it. It's my plan, and our thought, that we'll all be working within the time frame of the conditions of the franchise tag," he told reporters when asked if there were plans to potentially sign Pickens to a contract extension before the July 15 franchise tag deadline. "So it should play itself out, is the best way for me to say it. Make no mistake about it, we have long-term plans in mind for Pickens."

Pickens, 25, is currently set to make $27.3 million on his non-exclusive franchise tag for the 2026 season, though obviously without the long-term security that an extension provides. He also could still sign with another team, though that organization would have to give the Cowboys two first-round picks, a very unlikely scenario.

It's unclear if he'll attend the team's offseason program, though without him signing the franchise tag or agreeing to an extension—those negotiations haven't even started, as ESPN's Todd Archer reported Monday—he can't report to the team's facilities anyway.

"And I haven't pushed that on him," head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters regarding Pickens' status for the offseason program. "I mean, again, we're all going through the process. It's almost April. We're still a couple weeks away. It's going to play out the way it plays out. Again, it's all voluntary. We'll see where it goes ... Hey look, GP loves it here. We love GP. We have plans for GP to be here for a long time, so we'll let the business side of this thing play out and see where it goes."

The Cowboys and a contract stand-off with one of their star players has become a recurring theme in recent years, so it's hard to imagine the Pickens situation will resolve itself without some level of drama.

Pickens thrived with the Cowboys last season, catching 93 passes for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs. He also earned his first Pro Bowl nod. It's clear he established a strong rapport with Dak Prescott, and the duo of Pickens and CeeDee Lamb is one of the strongest in the NFL.

But keeping it intact won't come cheap, and the Cowboys have shown a willingness to let negotiations get ugly and play out over a long period of time (generally before signing the player to a massive deal anyway, although the Micah Parsons debacle was an exception after he was traded). This situation seems likely to chart a similar course.
