Ravens President Discusses Failed Maxx Crosby Trade With Raiders, Impact on Team's Reputation
The Baltimore Ravens aren't concerned about any negative impact on their reputation within the NFL after backing out of their trade agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders for Maxx Crosby.
Speaking to reporters from the league meetings on Monday, Ravens president Sashi Brown was asked about any potential fallout from the Crosby trade affecting their standing.
"People understand who we are and what we are about," Brown said.
As for the process that led to the Ravens opting not to finalize the agreed-upon deal, Brown explained there were no issues in that regard because it worked as it was supposed to.
"I think this is how it should be handled," he said. "We're disappointed that it didn't go through."
The Ravens and Raiders agreed to a deal for Crosby on March 6, with Baltimore sending two first-round draft picks to Las Vegas in exchange for the star pass-rusher.
It would have been the first time in the Ravens' 31-year franchise history that they traded even one first-round draft pick for a veteran player.
Four days later, however, the Raiders announced the trade was off because the Ravens "backed out" of the agreement. The decision came after Baltimore's medical staff raised questions about Crosby's physical.
Crosby underwent knee surgery in January to repair a meniscus injury that ended his 2025 season prior to Week 16.
Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, people in the league felt like the Ravens "ultimately just got cold feet" and wanted to back out because they had all of the pertinent information about Crosby prior to agreeing to the trade.
However, McFadden noted the Ravens' concerns were primarily about Crosby's long-term durability due to a "degenerative issue" with his knee. Their "consensus" opinion is that he will be fine in 2026.
One big reason that Crosby has been so valuable throughout his NFL career to this point is he doesn't come off the field. The 28-year-old has played at least 80 percent of the defensive snaps in 84 out of 110 career games, including every defensive snap in 31 games.
Even though there might have been some pushback from NFL teams about the Ravens' decision, it's hard to understand exactly what other clubs might do to make their feelings known if they had any.
If the Ravens make the best trade offer for a player in the future, is a team going to turn it down to send a message? If the Ravens offer a free agent the most money, are they going to turn it down?
Baltimore had no problems getting Trey Hendrickson to sign a four-year, $112 million deal in free agency after the Crosby deal fell apart, though general manager Eric Da Costa said the club had a plan in place to add both Hendrickson and Crosby.
This has been an offseason with more change than the Ravens are accustomed to. They replaced John Harbaugh, who had been their head coach for 18 seasons, with Jesse Minter coming off a disappointing 8-9 record in 2025.
The failed Crosby trade was an incredibly high-profile situation that led to a lot of external discussion about the Ravens, but they still have a tremendous amount of talent to get back to the playoffs next season that would quiet down any negative feelings that might be out there right now.
