Joey Browner, a former Minnesota Vikings star safety who is in the team's Ring of Honor, died Saturday at the age of 65, the team announced Sunday.

Browner was a standout at USC before being taken 19th overall by the Vikings in 1983. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 1985 and went on to earn six in a row. He spent nine seasons in Minnesota before closing out his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1992.

Browner finished his 10-year career with 37 touchdowns, 17 forced fumbles, 9.5 sacks and four defensive touchdowns. He's fifth all-time on the Vikings' interception list.

Browner's Vikings teammate Steve Jordan spoke highly him.

"We've lost a great friend and one of the best Vikings teammates," Jordan said, via the team's website. "God blessed Joey with phenomenal talent and a big heart to love people and be a beacon of positivity. Truly, he will be missed."

Browner was named to the 1980s NFL Team of the Decade and was inducted into the Vikings' Ring of Honor in 2013.

"The Ring of Honor is something that is very special because there are very few of us that are in there," Browner said at his Ring of Honor induction ceremony. "To be with people like Fran Tarkenton and Jim Marshall … Chris Doleman, John Randle, it's just a great honor."
