'Special,' Luis Robert Jr. Opens Up About Early Mets Tenure Since White Sox Trade After Walk-Off HR

Andrew PetersMar 29, 2026

Luis Robert Jr.'s tenure with the New York Mets has started off swimmingly.

The former Chicago White Sox center fielder has gone 3-for-8 with a home run and five RBI, hitting a three-run walk-off homer in the 11th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

"These last two games have really been special," Robert told reporters through a translator.

Robert spent the first six years of his career with the White Sox before being traded to New York in January for infielder Luisangel Acuña and right-handed pitcher Truman Pauley.

The 28-year-old has dealt with various injuries throughout his career, but had an All-Star season in 2023 when he was mostly healthy. Through the first two games of the 2026 campaign, he's shown what he's capable of.

Now, he'll look to use the momentum from his second career walk-off home run to propel him to another All-Star season.

"He's talented. He's gifted. Even that last one there, I thought the pitcher executed down and away, and he goes and gets it," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "With the conditions today, with the way the wind was blowing, especially from left field, to just be able to leave the yard like that in that situation, it goes to show you that this guy's special."
