New Ty Simpson, Jets Rumors on 'Smokescreen' Deception for NFL Draft Emerge After Alabama's Pro Day

Joseph ZuckerMar 29, 2026

The New York Jets' meetings with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson weren't a "smokescreen" ahead of the 2026 NFL draft, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The Crimson Tide staged their annual pro day this past Wednesday. As part of their trip to Tuscaloosa, Jets personnel met with Simpson for dinner on Thursday night and then held a workout Friday. The group included general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.

Cimini reported the team has "some level of interest" in Simpson and is "doing a deep dive into the QB class."

The Jets are in an unenviable position because they need a new long-term solution at quarterback, but they have the No. 2 pick in a year where only one QB is generally considered a top prospect.

Indiana's Fernando Mendoza is No. 3 on Bleacher Report's big board, with Simpson down in 26th. Mendoza was also the only signal-caller taken in B/R's most recent first-round mock.

Simpson only started one full season at Alabama, having backed up Jalen Milroe in 2023 and 2024. Ascending up the depth chart this year, he threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions.

B/R NFL scout Dame Parson called Simpson a "highly accurate quarterback who fits passes between defenders with immense touch" and praised his ability to scan the field to find an open target.

However, Parson also cited his lack of lateral athleticism and said the former Crimson Tide standout can hurry his throws in the face of pressure.

In general, it's tough to pinpoint one clear trait that will make Simpson successful in the NFL, which isn't to definitively say he won't emerge as a starting-caliber passer.

From the Jets' perspective, taking him at No. 2 would be a massive reach, and even using the 16th overall pick on him wouldn't be the best value play. New York kicks off Day 2 with the No. 33 pick, a much better place to snag Simpson if he's still available.

Having acquired Geno Smith, New York has a temporary answer to its quarterback situation, and that lessens the need to use a premium pick on a player who doesn't inspire internal confidence across the board.

Should the team take Simpson on Day 1, it will symbolize a strong endorsement.
