Tom Brady Says He Asked NFL About Potential Return from Retirement Amid Raiders Ownership Stake

Doric SamMar 26, 2026

Legendary quarterback Tom Brady revealed that he explored the possibility of resuming his playing career after becoming a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.

While speaking to Alex Sherman on the CNBC Sport podcast, Brady confirmed that he approached the league to gauge the parameters of a potential return to the field.

"Funny enough, you ask, I actually have inquired, and they don't like that idea very much, so I'm gonna leave it at that," Brady said. "We explored a lot of different things, and I'm very happily retired. Let me just say that, too."

Brady purchased a minority stake in the Raiders in 2024. He also works as the lead NFL in-game analyst for Fox. It's not a surprise that the NFL wouldn't want to muddy the waters even further by creating a path for the 48-year-old to resume his playing career.

However, Brady feels like he can still throw with the best of them. He showcased his skills during the Fanatics Flag Football Classic on Saturday, side-stepping a defender and tossing a touchdown pass to veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Still, even Brady knows that a return to playing full-time is unrealistic. The seven-time Super Bowl champion admitted that he would probably be better served by continuing to watch games from the broadcast booth.

"I loved being out there playing in the flag game," Brady said. "I loved not getting hit. I've got a lot of really fun things I'm involved in. It's never going to get old throwing passes to incredible athletes on the football field, but if anything, that game reconfirmed to me that I'm very happy in my retirement."
