Seahawks' Updated Salary Cap After Jaxon Smith-Njigba's Historic $168.6M Contract Extension

Joseph ZuckerMar 23, 2026

The Seattle Seahawks made a major commitment to their passing game Monday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the team agreed to a four-year, $168.6 million extension with wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. His $42.2 million annual salary will be the highest ever for the position.

The deal isn't set to go into effect until 2028, though. Smith-Njigba has one more guaranteed year left on his rookie contract, and Seattle already triggered his $23.9 million option for 2027.

The Seahawks are on pace to have $310.9 million in salary cap space once Smith-Njigba's raise is applied.

The 24-year-old set franchise records for receptions (119) and receiving yards (1,793) this past season. An All-Pro for the first time, he established himself as an elite pass-catcher.

Re-signing Smith-Njigba now could ultimately save money in the long run.

The Los Angeles Rams' Puka Nacua is a free agent in 2027. He and his representatives will now look to go beyond Smith-Njigba's $42.2 million. The New Orleans Saints' Chris Olave and Atlanta Falcons' Drake London will hit the open market as well. While they're unlikely to reset the bar, their next contracts could have an inflationary impact for wideouts as a collective.

The Minnesota Vikings' Justin Jefferson and Detroit Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown are both signed through 2028 but could look to get big extensions well before that.

Depending on how long they waited, the Seahawks could've plausibly seen the cost for Smith-Njigba climb past $43 million and perhaps even into the $45 million range.

General manager John Schneider now has a slightly better idea of his payroll outlook for the years ahead as well.

Quarterback Sam Darnold is a free agent in 2028. Leonard Williams and Uchenna Nwosu, two starters from an elite defense, are on expiring deals. Three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon was in the same draft class as Smith-Njigba, putting him on track for free agency in 2028.

Sooner or later, Schneider will need to determine which players he wants to prioritize and which are more expendable.

Smith-Njigba was clearly deemed a cornerstone for the roster before the difficult decisions arrive.
