Yankees Reportedly Trade Jorbit Vivas to Nationals, What Was Return for Infielder?
The New York Yankees reportedly have moved on from one of their young infielders in return for a promising prospect.
Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees dealt Jorbit Vivas to the Washington Nationals in return for Sean Paul Liñan. Liñan was Washington's No. 27 prospect and is now the No. 23 prospect in New York, per MLB Pipeline.
According to The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum, the Nationals designated Rule 5 pick and right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry for assignment after the trade.
Nusbaum noted that trading Vivas opens up a spot on the roster for Randal Grichuk, whom New York signed to a minor league deal last month.
Vivas, who was traded to the Yankees from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, made his big league debut last year and played 25 games, hitting a home run and five RBI with a .161 batting average. In seven minor league seasons, the 25-year-old has hit .271 with 52 homers, 94 steals and a .782 OPS.
With Vivas likely not set to make the Opening Day roster, trading him made the most sense, with him being out of options. In Washington, he'll likely serve as a backup infielder.
Now with a new squad, Vivas will look to make an early impact and prove capable of filling an everyday role in the lineup.
