Watch Alex Ovechkin Score 1,000th Career Goal, Join Wayne Gretzky with Incredible NHL Milestone

Alex Ovechkin and the Great One stand alone.

The Washington Capitals star scored a goal during Sunday's game against the Colorado Avalanche, which gave him 1,000 for his career between regular-season and postseason games. Wayne Gretzky is the only other player in NHL history to achieve such a feat:

It was an important goal, as it tied things up at two in the third period after the Avalanche were in the lead following two goals of their own in the final period. However, Colorado responded with the game-winning goal in overtime from Brock Nelson.

History is nothing new for Ovechkin, especially when it comes to Gretzky's marks.

The Capitals left-winger passed the Hall of Famer last April for the most goals in NHL history with 895:

It took him until his 923rd regular-season goal in his career to catch Gretzky when it came to combined scoring, though, as the latter enjoyed more success in the playoffs. Not only does he have four Stanley Cups to Ovechkin's one, he also scored a league-record 122 playoff goals in 208 games.

Ovechkin has 77 goals in 161 playoff games.

The biggest question at this point for Ovechkin this season is whether he will have an opportunity to add to his postseason marks. With 79 points, Washington is five points behind the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

If the Capitals can play well down the stretch and make up some ground, Ovechkin will have the chance to close the gap some on Gretzky when it comes to the playoff record for goals.
