Team USA is playing in its third straight WBC final. The Americans defeated Puerto Rico 8-0 to win the 2017 title but lost to Japan 3-2 in the 2023 title game.
A little luck was need in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic to reach the final, as the game ended on a controversial third strike call that appeared to be a ball. Still, the drama didn't take anything away from the victory for Team USA.
"That's what you dream about as a kid -- getting a chance to be in that moment, be in front of these fans," Team USA captain Aaron Judge said after Sunday's game, per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. "That was definitely special. I think you ask any guy in this clubhouse, on both sides, it was definitely a special game tonight."
Team USA will need all the good vibes it can get, as it will be facing a surging Venezuelan team that has been on an emotional journey through the WBC to reach the final for the first time.
"Baseball is beautiful," Venezuelan infielder Eugenio Suárez told Gonzalez. "Baseball is a sport that unites. I feel like this has brought happiness to our country, which it desperately needs and deserves. To have a united public, watching us every day in this World Baseball Classic, yelling and supporting us in these games -- it's really special."
It all makes for an exciting showdown on Tuesday night, as a champion will be crowned to end the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
