2026 World Baseball Classic WBC: Team USA v Team Dominican Republic

USA's Roman Anthony 'Blacked Out' After Hitting Go-Ahead WBC HR vs. Dominican Republic

Timothy RappMar 15, 2026

Boston Red Sox phenom Roman Anthony provided the crucial moment during the United States' 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic semifinals on Sunday, hitting the go-ahead homer in the top of the fourth inning.

Not that he fully remembers the ball going over the fence.

"So for me, it was about going out there and getting a good pitch to hit and just moving the line," he said on the Fox broadcast after the win (1:23 mark). "This lineup's unbelievable, so for me, it makes my life easy to go out there and just kind of try to pass the baton to the next guy. And for me, when I hit it, I kind of just blacked out. In my head, just, 'Please go. Please go.'"

It was a pivotal inning for the United States, as Gunnar Henderson led off the fourth with a solo shot of his own. The Dominican Republic's lone run came in the bottom of the second off a Junior Caminero homer.

In total, the Dominican Republic finished with eight hits but stranded eight runners, as six American pitchers—led by starter and game-winner Paul Skenes (4.1 innings, six hits, one earned run, two strikeouts—held the line.

As for Anthony, the 21-year-old appeared in 71 games for the Boston Red Sox in 2025, hitting .292 with eight homers, 32 RBI, 48 runs and a .859 OPS. He appears to be one of the burgeoning superstars in the sport, and the moment certainly hasn't been too big for him at the WBC

The United States will now face either Italy or Venezuela in the WBC final. Italy already beat the United States in the group stage, 8-6. The Italians have yet to lose at this year's World Baseball Classic, but it's hard to argue that any team can match the overall star power of this American squad.

Especially if 21-year-olds are blasting game-winning home runs.
