New MLB Rumors Reveal Possibility of Midseason Exhibitions vs. MiLB Players Amid Olympics Buzz
An interesting twist could be coming to the 2028 MLB season when the Los Angeles Olympics take place.
According to The Athletic's Evan Drellich, midseason exhibition games could take place if MLB players are participating in the Olympics. Drellich added that both the league office and the players' union are aligned in wanting players to participate in the Olympic Games for the first time in 2028.
Players' participation in the Games would "create an extended All-Star Break and enough downtime that players and clubs might want some action waiting for the regular season to restart." In that downtime, one possibility would be to have MLB players go up against minor leaguers in exhibition games.
"That's one of the ideas that's been floated," Bruce Meyer, the interim head of the players association, said Sunday evening at loanDepot Park, per Drellich. "In terms of other ideas at this point, it's premature."
According to Drellich, the 2028 All-Star Game is likely to occur on July 11, with Olympic baseball set to take place July 15-20.
