The 28-year-old American earned 750 FedEx Cup points to go along with the $4.5 million winners' purse.

Players Championship Leaderboard

  1. Cameron Young (-13; 750 FedEx Cup points, $4.5 million)
  2. Matt Fitzpatrick (-12; 500 points, $2.7 million)
  3. Xander Schauffele (-11; 350 points, $1.75 million)
  4. Robert MacIntyre (-10; 325 points; $1.25 million)

Young used a four-under 68 to move up the leaderboard and claim The Players Championship title.

Young entered Sunday behind 54-hole leader Ludvig Aberg, but the Swede handed away the lead at the start of the back nine.

Aberg bogeyed the 11th hole and then had a double bogey on the No. 12 to drop far away from first place.

Aberg's misfortune allowed for Young and Fitzpatrick to duel for the lead from the same group.

Young had the better tee shot on the 17th hole and rolled in a birdie to tie Fitzpatrick at 13-under.

Young then hit a 375-yard tee shot on the 18th hole to have a shot to reach the green in two shots. Young missed his birdie putt to the right, but then tapped in for par to win.

Fitzpatrick had an opportunity to send the tournament to a playoff, but he missed his par putt on the 18th.

Xander Schauffele finished third, while Robert MacIntyre claimed fourth. Aberg finished in a tie for fifth after a four-over 76.
