Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp: Week 2 Stock Report
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been in their 2015 training camp since July 25, which means we have had ample time to evaluate practically every member of the roster who has taken the field. Some players are struggling, and others are standing out, much the same as any year.
But who are these players? Let's take a look at the Steelers whose stocks are rising and whose stocks are falling now that we're two weeks into camp.
Stock Up: OLB Shayon Green
1 of 5
Outside linebacker Shayon Green was a 2014 undrafted free agent signing of the Miami Dolphins, but he did not make the team's final roster last year. But now, he has a shot at making the Steelers' 53-man roster this summer.
Green has been one of the surprise standouts of training camp, doing enough in practices to warrant him getting reps with the first-team defense. Steelers Depot's Jon Ledyard was particularly impressed with Green's work against the run on Wednesday, and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Chris Adamski noted Green got the starting snap at outside linebacker during first-team 11-on-11s on Wednesday as well.
This may not mean Green forces James Harrison, Jarvis Jones, Arthur Moats or Bud Dupree down the Steelers' depth chart as the summer wears on, but it is worth noting the Steelers may have found a diamond in the rough in Green, who could provide much-needed depth at outside linebacker this year.
Stock Down: OL Reese Dismukes
2 of 5
This summer's training camp has not been a good one for undrafted rookie reserve center Reese Dismukes. He has struggled with snapping the football, with Steelers Depot's Alex Kozora counting six botched snaps in one practice last week.
And he's also being "thrown around like a rag doll in one-on-ones," reports Kozora's colleague Jon Ledyard. Until and unless he can improve these basic fundamentals quickly, Dismukes may not even make it to September 1's first round of roster cuts. He's certainly the longest of shots to make the Steelers' 53-man roster.
Stock Up: RB Jawon Chisholm
3 of 5
Running back Jawon Chisholm is a new addition to the Steelers' roster, having been signed on Sunday after undrafted rookie Ross Scheueman was placed on injured reserve with an Achilles' tendon injury. But he's already managed to turn heads in the few practices in which he participated.
Partially, this was due to fellow backs Josh Harris and DeAngelo Williams being held out of practice. But on Monday, Chisholm got a lot of work for a brand-new Steeler, with PennLive's Jacob Klinger counting 10 carries for the back in Monday's practice.
Steelers Depot's Jon Ledyard was also impressed with Chisholm on Sunday, writing, "Chisholm showed good vision and little hesitation in his rushes, finding the hole quickly and pounding the rock inside for maximum yardage."
And though Harris was back on the field on Wednesday, that didn't push Chisholm to the sideline. Ledyard's colleague, Alex Kozora, noted Chisholm "has good vision, gets upfield," and is a "powerful back." If he keeps it up, he'll easily leapfrog fellow back Cameron Stingily in short order.
Stock Down: LB Jordan Zumwalt
4 of 5
It was already going to be a tough climb for second-year Steelers linebacker Jordan Zumwalt to crack the 53-man roster this year, given how deep the Steelers are at inside linebacker and the fact he missed his entire rookie season with a groin injury.
And now it looks like Zumwalt's job security is in jeopardy, based on how he's looked in training camp thus far. Steelers Depot's Matthew Marczi wrote on Wednesday Zumwalt, "doesn't appear any closer to securing a roster spot for himself. In fact, according to our observations of our own team, Zumwalt has not particularly been able to show too much thus far during training camp."
Marczi's colleague, Jon Ledyard, noted last week Zumwalt is, "simply too light to overwhelm blockers at the point-of-attack, and too slow to keep up with receivers in the open field." And that assessment hasn't changed a week later.
With players like Ryan Shazier, Lawrence Timmons, Sean Spence, Vince Williams and Terence Garvin on the roster, Zumwalt needed to come into this year's camp prepared and physically ready to go. But he hasn't shown he is either, yet, which means there will be fewer and fewer reps for him as the summer wears on without marked improvement.
Stock Up: OLB Anthony Chickillo
5 of 5
Shayon Green isn't the only Steelers outside linebacker who has had a good training camp thus far. Their 2015 sixth-round pick, Anthony Chickillo, has also managed to turn a few heads.
Chickillo, a collegiate defensive end with only marginal pass-rushing experience, seemed to be a long-shot to make the Steelers roster at first. But, now 30 pounds lighter and looking like a far quicker study than initially anticipated, it looks like the Steelers might be in good shape when it comes to their outside linebacker depth.
How well is Chickillo doing? Head coach Mike Tomlin said Chickillo is doing "good work" when asked last week by columnist Jim Wexell, something completely out of character for the coach to say about any rookie at this point in the summer.
Tomlin was also quite fired up when Chickillo would take part on the backs-on-backers drills, yelling, "Chickillo is up!" whenever it was his turn. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Mark Kaboly and Chris Adamski wrote last week that, "Chickillo continues to be a player you can't help but notice during training camp," adding, "Chickillo showed versatility by dropping into coverage and, after the ball was not thrown his way, he displayed good pursuit in chasing a receiver down the middle of the field for a tackle," as well as "easily beat[ing] a tight end off the edge while pass-rushing."
Chickillo may prove to be one of the biggest surprises of the Steelers' draft class and training camp, though more about his talents will be revealed once he takes the field on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game against the Minnesota Vikings.
