Kyler Murray Talks Growing Up A Vikings Fan, Injury Status, QB Competition, More After New Contract
After signing with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday., veteran quarterback Kyler Murray explained why it's a dream come true.
Murray told reporters that he was a Vikings fan growing up, adding, "I cried real tears whenever Brett (Favre) threw that interception," referring to Minnesota's devastating loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game during the 2009 season. The 28-year-old shared a throwback photo on social media showcasing his fandom:
After being limited to five games in 2025 due to a foot injury, Murray was asked about his recovery progress, and he declared, "When the time comes, I'll be out there ready to go."
There's a chance that Murray could have to compete with 2024 No. 10 pick J.J. McCarthy for the starting quarterback position in Minnesota, but it sounds like he's ready for any scenario. When asked if he expects to be the starter for the 2026 season, he replied, "I'm just grateful for the opportunity. I look forward to coming in and competing."
On Wednesday, Murray was released by the Arizona Cardinals after seven seasons with the franchise. The 2019 No. 1 pick quickly found a new home in Minnesota, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that he received a one-year deal in which the Vikings will pay $1.3 million of the $36.8 million he had already been guaranteed from his contract with the Cardinals.
McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to knee surgery, and his return to the field in 2025 wasn't what he had hoped. He was limited to 10 games due to various injuries, and the Vikings finished with a 9-8 record to fall short of the playoffs.

Minnesota is certainly hoping that the arrival of Murray can help McCarthy reach new heights, as the youngster is expected to be the franchise quarterback. Murray isn't going to give up the starting spot easily, so he could become a veteran mentor for McCarthy if he takes over the offense.
