Yankees GM Cashman Rips Narrative That Aaron Boone is 'Puppet' for Team, 'Definitely Frustrated'
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman isn't pleased with the perception surrounding him for the past few years.
While speaking to Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports, Cashman pushed back on the narrative that he's been controlling the decisions made by manager Aaron Boone since he was hired in 2018.
"Like at the end of the day, I know all that's going to matter is if we're winning games. And even when we are winning games, it still won't matter. Because there's a lot of narratives out there that just aren't the case," Cashman said. "Like, to this day, I'm definitely frustrated with the one narrative that the manager is the puppet and we're dictating his moves. None of it's true."
Boone has faced constant criticisms for his lack of postseason success despite having a strong lineup led by three-time American League MVP Aaron Judge. The Yankees have made just one World Series appearance in Boone's tenure, losing in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024.
The Yankees have been known known to rely heavily on analytics with Boone at the helm, which obviously requires some collaboration with the front office.
Still, Cashman made it clear that he has confidence in Boone and the rest of the team, so he doesn't try to meddle too much.
"I'm definitely not a micro-manager," Cashman told Thosar. "I'm the opposite. I am someone that will hire people I consider smarter than me and that have expertise in that area. And then I empower you to do your job. I will support you every step of the way..."
It remains to be seen if Cashman's approach will help the Yankees finally win their first World Series title since 2009 and reestablish themselves as the best team in the majors.
