Kevin Byard III, Patriots Agree to Contract After Bears Stint, Updated Salary Cap in NFL Free Agency
Veteran safety Kevin Byard III agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal with the New England Patriots, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Byard told NFL insider Josina Anderson the Patriots and Chicago Bears were his two finalists.
New England entered free agency $40 million under the salary cap. It has gone past that total and then some based on its moves already. Byard is the fifth player to line up a new deal with the Patriots, who have added $55.8 million in annual spending.

Jaguars' Hypothetical Alvin Kamara Trade Offer
Byard rebounded in a big way this past season, earning his first Pro Bowl nod since 2021. He led the league in interceptions (seven) and finished with 93 tackles and eight pass breakups.
According to Pro Football Reference, opposing quarterbacks had a 98.6 passer rating when targeting the 32-year-old through the air.
Byard was the No. 16 overall player in Bleacher Report's free agent big board with two days in the books.
While the three-time All-Pro has never played in New England, the locker room might feel somewhat familiar when considering he spent six seasons with Mike Vrabel on the Tennessee Titans.
The Patriots allowed the eighth-fewest yards in 2025, though they were somewhat vulnerable against the pass. They registered only 10 interceptions as a team and ranked a more modest 21st in opponent QB rating (92.8).
Byard can be a high-variance defender. As much as his interceptions jump off the page, he gave up the same number of touchdowns in addition to 16.5 yards per completion. His aggressive style results in turnovers but also leaves him susceptible for big gains.
By having him share a secondary with a cornerback as good as Christian Gonzalez, maybe New England can get the best version Byard.
