Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Snell spent four years at Ohio State, playing both fullback and defensive end, before being drafted by the Jets with the third overall pick in the AFL draft. He earned AFL Rookie of the Year honors in 1964 after rushing for 948 yards, his career high, and five touchdowns.
He was named an AFL All-Star in 1964, 1966 and 1969.
Snell's most memorable moment came in Super Bowl III in 1969, when he rushed for 121 yards, which was a record at the time, and a touchdown, despite playing on an injured knee. He helped lead the Jets to a win over the Baltimore Colts, which remains New York's only Super Bowl win in franchise history. Snell's touchdown is also the only touchdown scored by a Jet in the Super Bowl.
Snell, who emerged as a lead pass-blocker for the Jets later in his career, dealt with injuries in his final few seasons and retired in 1972. Snell was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor at MetLife Stadium in 2015.
