Trent Williams Trade Would Close 49ers' Super Bowl Window amid Latest NFL Rumors

The early indications from the 2026 NFL offseason suggest the San Francisco 49ers are absolutely going for it.

Unless maybe they aren't?

If that sounds at all confusing, that's because it feels a bit confusing in its totality. A bold move for hyper productive veteran receiver Mike Evans holds obvious going-for-it implications. Adding ex-New England Patriots offensive tackle Vederian Lowe feels like a T-crossing or I-dotting part of this win-right-now plan.

And that's what all makes the reports of the 49ers being "open to trading" prized offensive tackle Trent Williams, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, so confusing. Because their best offensive lineman by a mile and Brock Purdy's blindside protector is an essential part of any Super Bowl plan.

And, yes, just so this is clear, the 49ers should absolutely be viewing things in Super Bowl-or-bust terms. Because when this roster hasn't been ravaged by injuries, it has been championship-quality time and again.

They won 12 games in 2025 and have hit that mark in three of the past four seasons. They have a cheat-code playcaller in Kyle Shanahan and a cheat-code playmaker in Christian McCaffrey. Between Evans, Ricky Pearsall and, when he's ready to return from his Achilles tear, George Kittle, San Francisco should have no shortage of prime producers in the passing game.

The defense should be stingier, too. Nick Bosa's latest injury hiccup is in the rearview. Fred Warner already fast-tracked his recovery from a fractured and dislocated ankle he hurt in October. The many young players on this unit should be better seasoned and more prepared to contribute. The opportunities to add to this defense exist in both free agency and the draft.

Even special teams is in great shape with the re-signing of almost-automatic kicker Eddy Pineiro, who went 31-of-32 on field goals during his first season in San Francisco (playoffs included).

This roster has a real chance to be great—so long as Williams is a part of it.

No one player is bigger than the team, obviously, but this is a generational talent at one of the sport's most critical positions. It's hard to imagine how the offensive game plan is even supposed to work without him.

Who's keeping Purdy upright and buying him enough time to make downfield connections with Evans? Who's opening running lanes for McCaffrey? Frankly, who's even standing out on this otherwise mostly forgettable offensive line?

Hopefully, the 49ers have to worry about answering precisely none of these questions.

They are, after all, attempting to negotiate a contract restructuring with Williams. As Rapoport noted, those talks have "not been easy" and the decorated tackle "is frustrated with the process."

Ideally, then, this is all an attempted leverage play and nothing more. Williams seemingly holds most of the cards, since San Francisco doesn't have an obvious replacement on the roster (a fact unchanged by the Lowe addition), so maybe the Niners are attempting to level the playing field by sending the message that they could be OK without him if they had to be.

You'd hope, though, that they understand that isn't the case. Like, at all. If they want any shot of winning at the highest levels next season, then Williams is an essential puzzle piece. There's just no championship picture without him.
