While things eventually picked up, it was a bit of a slow start as Buffalo's Josh Doan scored the only goal of the first period. In the second period, Jason Zucker gave the Sabres a 2-0 lead, and Alex Tuch a few moments later.
Tampa Bay's Corey Perry got his team on the board in the second, but another goal from Tuch extended Buffalo's lead back to three goals.
The Lightning then scored three unanswered goals to get back in it, as Nikita Kucherov, Zemgus Girgensons and J.J. Moser all found the back of the net. Kucherov then gave Tampa Bay the lead early in the third period.
The Lightning kept their momentum going as Brayden Point scored to make it 6-4 before Sam Carrick finally answered for Buffalo. Tampa Bay's Brandon Hagel extended the lead to two goals again a few minutes later.
The goals didn't end there, however, as Rasmus Dahlin scored for the Sabres before Zucker tied it up at seven goals apiece.
Josh Doan played hero, hitting the go-ahead goal for Buffalo with just under five minutes to play.
The Lightning finished with 28 shot attempts, while Buffalo had 42. Tampa Bay goalie Jonas Johansson had an .810 save percentage and Buffalo's Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen posted a .750 save percentage.
The two squads, which currently sit atop the Atlantic division, will meet again next month, but the same kind of offensive performance seems like an unlikely outcome.
