Latest Alec Pierce Rumors as Teams 'Bracing for a Significant Price Tag' for WR in NFL Free Agency

Paul KasabianMar 6, 2026

NFL free agency starts Wednesday, but the legal tampering period begins Monday, when teams and certified agents of players are free to communicate and negotiate contracts.

One player connected with a "significant price tag" ahead of the new league year is Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

The Colts selected Pierce out of Cincinnati with the 53rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. He's broken out over the past two seasons, leading the league in yards per reception each time (22.3 in 2024, 21.3 in 2025). The four-year veteran eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in 2025, catching 47 passes for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns.

Pierce has been projected to land a massive new contract from multiple sources.

ESPN's Dan Graziano predicted Pierce will land a three-year, $80 million contract with $55 million guaranteed from the Los Angeles Chargers.

Spotrac has Pierce landing a four-year deal worth $20.2 million annually (nearly $81 million total).

The 6'3", 211-pound Pierce, who turns 26 years old on May 2, is ranked fifth overall on Gregg Rosenthal of NFL Network's list of 2026 free agents. ESPN's Matt Bowen has him fourth, and Pro Football Focus has him 11th.

Ultimately, all of the signs point to Pierce getting a big deal. As far as what he's looking for, Pierce gave an idea to Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show (h/t Nick Shook of NFL.com).

"Definitely, like, quarterback play, like, and stability in a franchise, like, winning culture. Things like that, I'd say, are the most important," Pierce said. "Just being in Indy, playing with a ton of quarterbacks, I think they're on the way to figuring that out with Daniel if they can get a long-term deal with him because I believe in him a ton as a quarterback. But I think I've understood the battles that come with not having that stability. So, like, I think as a free agent, that would be something I would look into a lot."

The Chargers, who sport two-time Pro Bowler Justin Herbert at quarterback and have the most cap space in football (per Over the Cap), make a lot of sense. The same goes for the Tennessee Titans (2025 No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward), the Washington Commanders (2024 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels) and the Las Vegas Raiders (presumed No. 1 overall 2026 draft pick Fernando Mendoza). The latter three teams round out the top four in cap space and could all use a receiver of Pierce's skillset.

We'll see what Pierce decides soon enough as free agency looms large.
