The Puerto Rican team features a number of MLB players such as Edwin Díaz, Nolan Arenado, Willi Castro, Heliot Ramos and Seth Lugo, among others. While one of the country's biggest names, Kiké Hernández, won't be available to play after requiring offseason surgery on his left elbow, he'll be with the team during the tournament to support them.
But Puerto Rico is missing many of its biggest stars for this WBC, including Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, José Berríos, Victor Caratini and Javier Báez. The first four are unavailable due to a lack of insurance on their contracts, while Báez tested positive for marijuana during the 2023 edition.
It's a major blow for the Pool A hosts.
"I think the [initial] disappointment is that we are hosting for the first time in a while, and [Lindor, Correa and Báez] were going to play together," Boston Red Sox manager and former Team Puerto Rico general manager Alex Cora told reporters. "So from that end, people got upset for two days, and now everybody's behind these guys. They already bleached their hair, including [Arenado]."
Bleached hair and Bad Bunny kicks—Puerto Rico will be hosting in style.
