New Mets Rumors Update Freddy Peralta Contract Talks Ahead of 2026 MLB Season
The New York Mets made one of the biggest moves of the offseason when they traded for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, but they will only have him for one year if they don't come to terms on a new contract.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Monday that "no serious discussions have taken place" between the right-hander and the National League East team to this point even though he is entering the final season of his deal.
The report comes after Peralta said, "no comment" when asked Friday if there have been any extension discussions.
It wouldn't be surprising if New York eventually takes the necessary steps to make sure the 29-year-old remains with the team beyond just the 2026 campaign. After all, it has been anything but stingy with its payroll and enters the new season behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers in that category.
Peralta also figures to remain effective for years to come given his age and is coming off a dominant season for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The two-time All-Star posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 204 strikeouts in 176.2 innings while finishing fifth in National League Cy Young voting. He helped lead the Brewers to a National League Central crown and spot in the NL Championship Series, where they lost to the eventual-champion Dodgers.
He is now anchoring the rotation for a team in championship-or-bust mode after also adding Bo Bichette to the lineup this offseason.
Bichette, Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto represent quite the formidable group for the offense, and Peralta gives the pitching staff an ace to rely on in the season's biggest moments.
It just remains to be seen whether he will be the ace for the Mets after 2026.
