New Eagles Rumors on Jerrod Johnson Contract, Role with Nick Sirianni and Sean Mannion

The Philadelphia Eagles are making yet another addition to the staff of new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the team is hiring former Houston Texans quarterback coach Jerrod Johnson:

The Eagles have been busy reworking a huge portion of their offensive staff this offseason after 2025's disappointments on that side of the ball.

Alongside the hiring of Mannion, the Birds have brought aboard Josh Grizzard to operate as the pass-game coordinator, Chris Kuper to lead the offensive line (replacing team legend Jeff Stoutland) and tight ends coach / run-game coordinator Ryan Mahaffey, among others. Those moves are geared toward shifting the team to a new system built around an outside zone rushing attack and likely will include more under-center looks and play-action.

It will be yet another new offense for quarterback Jalen Hurts to learn, though head coach Nick Sirianni isn't concerned about that adjustment.

"You may have a scheme, you always want to fit it to the players. But the great thing about great players is they can usually fit to any scheme," he told reporters. "If we're saying that we're going to run a little bit more play action, a little more outside zone, a little more boot action off of that, again, those are some things that maybe we're saying, right? I'm sure you guys can read. But he's super athletic being able to get that stretch read. He's going to have a lot of pull. When we're in the gun, he's got a lot of pull on the defense that he could run the ball the other way. Well, it's the same thing if it's a boot. He's going to have a lot of pull on that. He's been really productive in the play-action pass game. We haven't run as many boots and nakeds here in the past, but I know he's good at those when he does those. And so, again, because Jalen's the type of player that he is, I'm comfortable that you could tell me whatever system we're going to put in, could he be able to do it? Yeah, because that's a sign of a good football player. But particularly these things that he has done well, maybe in a smaller sample size but he has done well in those in the past.

As for Johnson, it remains to be seen what role he will hold in Philly, but he was one of three candidates the Eagles interviewed for the offensive coordinator role who has since been hired to the offensive staff, joining Mannion and Grizzard.

Johnson, 37, operated as Houson's quarterback coach between the 2023-25 seasons. He also had stints as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings (2022) and a three-year tenure with the Indianapolis Colts (2019-21), operating as an offensive quality control coach for two of those seasons.
