New Jets Rumors on Glenn's Defensive Scheme After Jermaine Johnson Trade for Titans' T'Vondre Sweat

Doric SamMar 1, 2026

The New York Jets' trade with the Tennessee Titans this past week reportedly was more than a simple player swap and actually signifies a major change in the team's defensive strategy.

The Jets sent defensive end Jermaine Johnson to the Titans in exchange for nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat. ESPN's Rich Cimini spoke to two people familiar with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn's thinking and reported that he is planning to switch to a 3-4 front, making Johnson expendable.

"They won't live in a 3-4 -- there will be multiple fronts -- but this represents a notable shift in philosophy," Cimini explained. "It's a big reason that Johnson, viewed as a 4-3 defensive end, was shipped to Tennessee, where he will play in a 4-3 under former Jets coach Robert Saleh."

Sweat was described as "a 6-foot-4, 366-pound run stuffer/space eater who should be ideal in the middle of a 3-4 front." He joins an impressive rotation that also includes defensive tackles Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs.

The Jets will have the chance to add a talented edge rusher with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Cimini named Ohio State's Arvell Reese and Texas Tech's David Bailey as the "top candidates" to be selected by New York.

Glenn is taking over the defensive play-calling in what could be a make-or-break season, so the Jets will spend the offseason trying to find the right players to fit his scheme and help the team improve in 2026.
