World Baseball Classic 2026 Top Storylines to Track on This Year's Schedule Ahead of KO Bracket

Kristopher KnoxMar 1, 2026

The 2026 Winter Olympics may be over, but fans of international competition aren't out of options just yet. After a three-year hiatus, the World Baseball Classic is back and is set to begin with pool play on Wednesday. The knockout bracket is slated to begin on March 13.

Japan will look to defend its 2023 title and maintain its overall dominance in the event. Since the World Baseball Classic (WBC) debuted in 2006, Japan has won three of five tournaments.

A star-studded United States team will look to win its first title since 2017, while several other strong baseball nations will look to put themselves in the history books.

To date, Japan, the United States, and the Dominican Republic are the only teams that have won the WBC tournament. 19 of the 20 teams we saw in the 2023 tournament will return, with Brazil stepping in for China.

Here's a look at what's ahead and the top storylines to track in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Team South Africa v. Team Spain

The qualification process for the 2026 WBC is complete, and exhibition play will wrap on Tuesday. Pool play will begin on Wednesday, and that will determine the field for the knockout bracket.

This year's tournament will feature four five-team pools that will play in four distinct locations.

Pool A will consist of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, Panama, and Colombia, while Pool B will consist of the United States, Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, and Brazil. Japan, Australia, South Korea, Czechia, and Chinese Taipei will make up Pool C, while Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Israel, the Netherlands, and Nicaragua will comprise Pool D.

Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico will host Pool A's games. Daikin Park in Houston will host Pool B and the quarterfinal round. The Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan will host Pool C, while LoanDepo Park in Miami will host Pool D, along with the semifinal and championship games.

Pool play will continue through Wednesday, March 11, and the top two teams from each pool will advance to the knockout bracket. Each stage of the knockout bracket will feature single-game contests in a single-elimination format.

The quarterfinals will take place on March 13 and 14, and the semis will unfold on March 15 and 16, while the Championship Game is scheduled for March 17.

Will Japan Win Again? Will Canada Finally Make Noise?

Shohei Ohtani of Japan

As previously mentioned, Japan has won three WBC tournaments, including the most recent. However, it didn't win in 2013 or 2017, and it narrowly outlasted the United States in 2023.

Of course, the way in which Japan won the last WBC was quite memorable. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani struck out then-Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout to seal a 3-2 victory.

Ohtani will be back for Team Japan, along with MLB stars like teammate and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida, and Chicago Cubs slugger Seiya Suzuki.

According to ESPN, Japan is the second-favorite behind Team USA at +320 odds (bet $100 to win $320).

It will be a major surprise if Japan doesn't advance from pool play and make a significant run in the knockout bracket. Pool C isn't loaded with top contenders, and Japan will also have home-field advantage.

Canada, though, has yet to advance past pool play, despite being involved in every WBC tournament. The Canadians are looking to change that in 2026, mere months after the Toronto Blue Jays fell just shy of beating the Dodgers in the World Series.

Team Canada's roster features 22 MLB stars, including Cleveland Guardians catcher Bo Naylor, Seattle Mariners infielder Josh Naylor, and Texas Rangers pitcher Cal Quantrill.

"I think it shows that Canadian baseball is definitely trending in the right direction," Josh Naylor said, per Jackson Stone of MLB.com. "We got a lot of guys who are here for the right reasons and are at really good stages in their careers. Obviously we hope that it [provides] a good example for Canadian baseball players that there is a future in this game."

Canada has the talent needed to make the quarterfinals for the first time in history, though it has lengthy 35-1 odds to actually win the tournament, per ESPN.

Team USA Seeking Redemption

Aaron Judge

Since the 2021 WBC was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's been nearly a decade since the United States won the tournament. It came painfully close in 2023, and Team USA is looking to rebound in a big way this year.

The United States' roster almost reads like an All-Star lineup and will feature both of the reigning Cy Young Award winners—Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes—along with reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge.

The list of Team USA standouts also includes Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman, Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper, Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber, and recently retired star Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young winner and three-time World Series champion, will compete in the WBC for the first time.

While Team USA is filled with 30 professionals who largely compete against each other during the MLB season, fans can expect national pride to be a unifying theme throughout the tournament. For the Americans, it could be seen as a continued theme after Team USA took gold in both the men's and women's Olympic hockey tournaments.

"I'm going into this (tournament) to win it, but it's not just that," Judge said, per Bob Klapisch of NJ.com. "I'm representing the U.S. I love this country. It's the greatest country in the world."

Unsurprisingly, the United States is considered a strong favorite entering pool play. According to ESPN. Team USA has -1000 odds (bet $1000 to win $100) to win Pool B and even odds to win the entire bracket.
