Cardinals, Manager Oliver Marmol Agree to Contract Extension Ahead of 2026 MLB Season

While the St. Louis Cardinals are coming off three straight seasons without a playoff appearance, they still believe in manager Oliver Marmol enough to give him a contract extension.

The Cardinals announced Sunday they agreed to a two-year extension with Marmol that also features a club option for the 2029 campaign:

St. Louis promoted Marmol to manager ahead of the 2022 season, and things started off in ideal fashion with a National League Central crown in his first year.

Yet that remains the high point of his tenure thus far, as the team dropped to last place in the division the following year before missing the playoffs again in 2024 and 2025. Marmol is 325-323 overall in four seasons, but that is propped up by the 93-69 mark in 2022.

Gabe Lacques of USA Today noted Marmol still provided "a steady hand" for the organization as it transitioned from longtime baseball operations president John Mozeliak to Chaim Bloom, who was hired in January 2024.

Lacques also pointed out such an extension "would certainly quell whispers that two-time World Series champion Yadier Molina might be a manager-in-waiting."

St. Louis hired the franchise legend as a special assistant to Bloom in January.

"We wanted everyone to know that Oli is our guy long-term," Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said.

While the Cardinals have historically been NL Central powerhouses, many predictions see them as the worst team in the division heading into the 2026 season. It is a difficult position for Marmol to be in if there are any lingering questions about Molina eventually taking over, and he will be under plenty of pressure to exceed expectations.

The Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers are all coming off playoff appearances, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have a young and talented roster with Paul Skenes leading the way.

Marmol could be looking at an uphill battle to contend for a playoff spot, but he at least has a contract extension to fall back on if the team struggles again this year.
