New Breece Hall Rumors on Chiefs' Pursuit Before Jets Revealed Decision for 2026 NFL Free Agency
The New York Jets appear to be committed to retaining running back Breece Hall before he enters free agency this year, but he reportedly would've had the chance to land with a perennial title contender.
ESPN's Nate Taylor reported that the Kansas City Chiefs were "close" to acquiring Hall from the Jets ahead of last season's trade deadline in November. The Jets reportedly wanted a 2026 third-round pick in return, but a source told Taylor that the Chiefs "declined in part because they felt they could attract Hall to Kansas City if he was available in free agency."

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, it sounds like they won't get the chance to court Hall. Jets general manager Darren Mougey told reporters at the NFL scouting combine earlier this week that the team will look to sign the 24-year-old to a long-term deal by next week, and the franchise tag or transition tag will be "an option" if a deal isn't reached.
Hall is one of the most dynamic young running backs in the league. In 2025, he produced 1,065 yards and four touchdowns for his first career 1,000-yard season, and he also added 36 catches for 350 yards and another score.
If the Chiefs don't get the chance to pursue Hall, there are multiple talented ball-carriers available on the open market this offseason.
Taylor noted that "the top candidates appear to be" free-agent running backs Kenneth Walker III, Travis Etienne Jr. and Tyler Allgeier. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love could also be an option for Kansas City with the No. 9 pick in this year's draft, but B/R's NFL Scouting Department predicted that the New Orleans Saints will select the speedster at No. 8.
Strengthening the rushing attack will be crucial for the Chiefs as they try to fight for a playoff spot in 2026 while star quarterback Patrick Mahomes works his way back from a torn ACL.
