Breece Hall's Jets Future Gets Crucial Update from GM amid Franchise, Transition Tag Rumors

Doric SamFeb 24, 2026

New York Jets running back Breece Hall is expected to be one of the top free agents on the market this offseason, but it sounds like the team won't let him get there.

At the NFL combine on Tuesday, ESPN's Rich Cimini reported that Jets general manager Darren Mougey "strongly" suggested that the team will use the franchise tag or transition tag on Hall if a deal isn't reached by next week.

As Cimini previously reported, the franchise tag for running backs is projected to be at $14.5 million, while the transition tag is projected at $11.5 million. The transition tag will give the Jets the right to match an offer sheet that Hall receives from another team on the open market.

Hall is coming off his first career 1,000-yard season. At 24 years old, it's clear that his best years are still ahead of him, and he could be an impact player on a contending team.

The Jets are still in the throes of their rebuild under Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, so it wouldn't be a surprise if Hall doesn't want to stick around while the losing continues. Cimini noted that the speedster has been "dropping hints for months that he might want to move on."

Losing Hall for nothing would be a major mistake by Mougey. Cimini suggested that a tag-and-trade would be a viable outcome if he truly doesn't want to be in New York in 2026.

Still, it would be tough for Jets fans to watch another promising young talent walk out the door, so Mougey should be motivated to keep Hall in the fold and avoid adding to the frustrations of the downtrodden fan base.
