Sabathia is now the 24th member of the Yankees to have his jersey retired, and the first since Paul O'Neill received the honor in 2022. He will also receive a plaque in Monument Park.
The 45-year-old spent 11 of his 19 MLB seasons with the Yankees (2009-19), earning three All-Star bids and a World Series title during his time in the Bronx. The six-time All-Star and one-time Cy Young Award-winner finished his career with a 251-161 record, 3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 3,093 strikeouts.
Other stops included the Cleveland Guardians (2001-08) and Milwaukee Brewers (2008). He was inducted in the Hall of Fame this past July.
Sabathia's impact on the organization has lived on. One of his most prominent former teammates still remembers him pitching out of the bullpen in 2019 during the postseason until his injured arm would no longer allow it.
"Watching him go out there hurt and then basically throw until his arm came off, you can't help but be motivated by that," Aaron Judge told reporters in July. "... That last run was a great example. He threw literally until he couldn't throw anymore. I'll never forget that. We didn't finish it that year, but he knew if we were gonna get there, it was gonna take all of your body and soul."
And now his memory will remain in Yankee Stadium forever.
