Sidney Crosby Injury Update, Timeline for Penguins Star's Return After Canada's Olympics Run

Julia StumbaughFeb 25, 2026

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will miss at least four weeks with the lower-body injury he suffered during the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.

The Penguins placed Crosby on injured reserve Wednesday, the day before resuming regular-season play with a home game against the New Jersey Devils.

Defenseman Kris Letang was activated from injured reserve Wednesday in a corresponding move.

Crosby has led the Penguins with 59 points (27 goals and 32 assists) through 56 games this season.

The Penguins, who have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons, sit second place in the Metropolitan Division coming out of the Olympic break.

Crosby suffered his lower-body injury after taking multiple hard hits, including one that awkwardly bent his leg underneath him, during Canada's quarterfinal overtime win against Czechia on Feb. 18.

After leaving that game in the second period, Crosby sat out both Canada's semifinal win over Finland on Friday and gold medal game loss to the United States on Sunday.

Crosby, who was considered a game-time decision until shortly before the championship game's 8:10 a.m. ET puck drop, told reporters he didn't feel like he would have been "able to" play.

"It becomes pretty clear at that point if I'm not able to go, then I'm not going to compromise our team or put myself out of that," Crosby said about not trying to play through the injury.

The news leaves the Penguins with a few major decisions to make, both regarding their lineup over the next month and how the franchise will approach the 2026 trade deadline.

The Penguins had slid first-line winger Rickard Rakell over to Crosby's spot on the top line while practicing without their captain earlier this week, and called up Avery Hayes from the AHL to fill in for Rakell on the right.

The Pens could now try out Rakell, who played center earlier in his career and got some reps at the position during the preseason, in Crosby's spot while running Tommy Novak, Ben Kindel and Blake Lizotte down the middle of the lineup.

Evgeni Malkin, who has shifted to play on Novak's wing this season, will be tasked with upping his production at both even strength and on the power play in order to make up for Crosby's absence.

Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas made his first move since the lifting of the Olympic trade freeze by dealing defenseman Brett Kulak to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Samuel Girard and a pick.

The Pens have multiple other expiring contracts, including Anthony Mantha, Noel Acciari and Connor Dewar, that Dubas could consider moving ahead of the deadline.

Malkin also remains unsigned past 2026, although he and the Penguins were reportedly expected to discuss an extension over the Olympic break.

Considering how strong the Penguins' fourth line has been with Dewar and Acciari, and how much of a consistent contributor Mantha has been during his 20-goal season, trading them for draft stock could make it even more difficult for the Penguins to stay in the postseason picture over the next month.

The Penguins could alternatively decide to add some center depth in order to strengthen their lineup down the middle without Crosby.

Dubas has nine days to decide on the Penguins' direction for the rest of the season before the trade deadline sets in at 3 p.m. ET.

A four-week return timeline would put Crosby back in the Penguins' lineup on March 25, leaving the Pens without their top center and leading producer for at least a 15-game stretch.

What record the Penguins are able to post over those 15 games could determine whether Crosby is ultimately able to make what could be a final playoff run with Malkin.
