Will Travis Kelce Return to Chiefs? GM Talks 'Process' for 'Icon' amid NFL Retirement Buzz
Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach didn't provide much insight when addressing the playing status of tight end Travis Kelce in 2026.
"Travis is the best. He's an icon," the GM said Tuesday. "... We'll just let that process play out."
Veach told reporters the team has "kind of prepared for either scenario" in terms of Kelce retiring or returning:

In November, Kelce signaled his hope to be sure one way or the other early into the offseason.
"It's one of those things where I'd like to make that decision before they have draft picks and free agency opens," he said. "And they can go out there and fill the roster appropriately. All of that will be after the season. I won't think about it until then."
By January, the 11-time Pro Bowler's mindset had evolved a bit.
"Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I've got to take some time," he told reporters. " Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to kind of give this one [year] a shot. We'll see."
Kelce is starting to show his age. Excluding 2013, when he only played in one game, 2024 and 2025 are his two worst seasons in terms of yards per contest. He has also averaged 9.7 yards per catch during that span.
The 36-year-old is more of a volume shooter at this point, no longer possessing the physical tools that made him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, are coming off a 6-11 season, and franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL.
From Kelce's perspective, extending your career was an easy call when your team is regularly appearing in the Super Bowl. The calculus is much different if Kansas City is taking a step backward and needs to retool the roster.
Not to mention, Kelce doesn't have to worry about what's next for him. He has long been planning for life after football.
Given all of the factors at play, you'd lean toward Kelce hanging up his cleats. The longer he goes without announcing a decision, the more he might talk himself into a 14th year with the Chiefs.
