Phillies' Bryce Harper Says He Still Has 'A Lot to Prove to Myself' Ahead of 2026 MLB Season
Bryce Harper is a multiple time All-Star and MVP who's in all likelihood headed to the Hall of Fame. The Philadelphia Phillies star isn't going to rest on his laurels anytime soon, though.
"I still have a lot to prove to myself," he told The Athletic's Matt Gelb. "That's my inner monologue. You know what I'm saying? I put a lot of pressure on myself. I just always have."
Harper elaborated on what that mindset represents.

"That I could play this game at a high level for a long time — for the next whatever years I'm going to play," he said. "I think that's my biggest thing. There's so much wellness and stuff in the world nowadays, and I feel like it can get me to that point."
Harper's 2025 performance was a small step below his usual standards. In 132 games, he finished with a .261/.487/.487 slash line and had 27 homers while driving in 75 runs.
The 33-year-old remained an above-average MLB slugger, though. He had a .361 wOBA and a 131 RC+, per FanGraphs.
Scott Boras, Harper's agent, pointed out to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki that the four-time Silver Slugger winner saw 43 percent of his pitches in the zone. It was the lowest rate of any qualified hitter.
"Give Bryce Harper more pitches to hit and the metrics speak that all that they want will be delivered," Boras said. "Because the metrics are clearly there that he's among the top in the game. He continues to be. All that data says that."
The Phillies didn't bring in a lot of reinforcements to support Harper and thus lower the likelihood of opposing teams pitching around him. Re-signing Kyle Schwarber was at least big, and having Alec Bohm avoid another slow start to the year will go a long way, too.
Harper won't be immune to the effects of aging forever. Sooner or later, he'll cease to be even an above-average hitter.
Still, making such a concerted effort to maintain his longevity could help him stave off Father Time for longer than some of his contemporaries.
