The game will be particularly meaningful for Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose mother is from Leverkusen, Germany.
Detroit is the fourth different team confirmed to be playing an international game next season. It joins the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
The Rams and 49ers game in Australia will reportedly be played in Week 1, though the league has not yet confirmed the date. The 49ers have also been designated as the home team for a game in Mexico City.
Dallas is going to be the designated home team in Rio de Janeiro.
Dates and matchups for all of the international games will likely be released along with the entire 2026 schedule in the spring.
The upcoming season will see the NFL play a record nine games outside of the United States. Other host cities for the games include Madrid, Spain and Paris, France. London will also host three games, with the Jacksonville Jaguars potentially playing at Wembley Stadium twice.
Since the Lions are the designated host in Munich, their list of potential opponents will be pulled from their home games. The candidates include their NFC North rivals (Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings), New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and New York Giants.
This will mark the first international game for the Lions since 2015. They lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 45-10 at Wembley Stadium in Week 8 that season.
The Lions missed the playoffs in 2025 with a 9-8 record after winning the NFC North in each of the previous two years.
