Kyle Tucker Dismisses Criticism of Historic $240M Dodgers Contract in MLB Free Agency

Scott PolacekFeb 23, 2026

Newly signed Los Angeles Dodgers star Kyle Tucker hears the criticism after he joined the back-to-back World Series champions on a four-year, $240 million deal that makes him the highest-paid player in the league on an average annual value, especially with a potential labor battle looming over the sport.

It just doesn't bother him.

"It doesn't bother me, it really doesn't," Tucker said, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale. "I'm sure it would have probably happened in some aspect regardless of where I would have went. But I think with this team, winning the last two years, probably made it bigger."

The Tucker contract was something of an inflection point, though, in the labor discussions.

After all, he joined the team with the highest payroll in the league that has used its vast resources to separate from the majority of its competition in recent years. Nightengale noted Los Angeles is actually paying $119.9 million for the 29-year-old in 2026 if the 110 percent penalty for signing him despite being over the highest luxury tax threshold applies.

That is quite a lot of money for someone who is a four-time All-Star but has also dealt with durability issues the past two years and has just one top-five MVP finish.

"The moment Tucker signed his stunning deal, Armageddon sirens screamed throughout Major League Baseball," Nightengale wrote. "Owners immediately decried that his signing is Exhibit 1-A why a salary cap is needed. And the union argued that this is why a salary cap would completely ruin the fair market."

For his part, Tucker said, "I just happen to be on the team this front office assembled. I mean, obviously, every team would want to get the best players on their own team, but it doesn't always work out like that. But this team does a pretty good job trying to put the best product out on the field for the fans."

Los Angeles has certainly succeeded in doing just that with back-to-back World Series titles, and anything else but another crown would be considered a disappointment.

After all, Tucker is joining a team that already features Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and many other headline names. If nothing else, he may simply be able to blend in as part of a collection of stars instead of being the primary focus of opposing pitching staffs.

But his contract won't blend in during future labor discussions around the league, especially if there ends up being a lockout.

Still, he isn't worried about the criticism at this point.
