Ty Simpson Reportedly Regained Weight Ahead of NFL Combine After Dealing With Gastritis Last Season
Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is prepared to show his skills at the NFL scouting combine, and he's reportedly on the verge of putting one of the biggest concerns surrounding him to rest.
Simpson's measurables have been called into question, as his slight frame at 6'2" could make it hard for him to adjust to the physicality of the NFL. However, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero revealed that Simpson lost weight during the 2025 season due to gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining. The signal-caller reportedly has regained weight ahead of the NFL combine.

"He also was dealing with a severe case of gastritis toward the tail-end of the season. He was weighing in the 190s by the time they got to the Rose Bowl. I'm told he's back up to 215; he is going to look the part," Pelissero said. "All the scouts I've talked to have said in this type of session, Ty Simpson really should be able to stand out and be able to help himself."
Despite being considered the clear QB2 in the 2026 draft class behind Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, Simpson still needs to prove that he's worthy of a first-round pick. B/R's Damian Parson gave him a second-round grade in his scouting report, but he will have the chance to improve his standing during the passing drills at the NFL combine.
Pelissero went on to add that teams with multiple first-round picks this year could be eyeing Simpson. He named the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams as squads that will be watching closely to see how the 23-year-old measures up this week.
Simpson and the rest of the quarterbacks at the combine will take the field for throwing drills on Saturday.
