Former NFL defensive back Ronyell Whitaker, who starred at Virginia Tech before playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings, has died at the age of 46.

The Vikings relayed a statement from Whitaker's family on Sunday evening regarding his death.

Whitaker, who was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, played at Virginia Tech from 1999 to 2002. He was a third-team All-American in 2001 and a two-time Big East All Conference player as well.

Whitaker went undrafted in 2003 but signed with the Bucs and played four games. He continued his pro career and signed with NFL Europe's Rhein Fire in 2006. Whitaker had four interceptions (including two returned for touchdowns) during the 2006 season en route to All-NFL Europe honors.

Whitaker used the opportunity to get back into the NFL, where he signed with the Vikings in 2006. He played 16 games with two starts in 2006, accumulating 24 tackles (21 solo). Whitaker played another 11 games for Minnesota in 2007.

Whitaker signed with the Detroit Lions in 2008 and the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2009 but did not make appearances for either team before retiring in 2010.

The statement released by Whitaker's family revealed his post-playing days exploits and the type of person he was away from the field.

"His journey didn't end there. He was a defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School from 2014-18 and was the CEO/Owner of privately-owned Whitaker Group, LLC, specializing in relocation transactions and short sales since 2011.

"While many knew him for his athletic accomplishments, those closest to him knew him best for his generous heart, unwavering loyalty and deep love for his family. He was a protector, a mentor and a source of strength and laughter to all who had the blessing of knowing him."

Tragedy has struck the Vikings twice in recent days after the death of 25-year-old wide receiver Rondale Moore, who died on Saturday in his hometown of New Albany, Indiana.
