B/R NHL Staff Predictions for USA vs. Canada 2026 Winter Olympics Gold-Medal Men's Hockey Game

B/R NHL StaffFeb 21, 2026

You knew it would come down to this.

USA. Canada. For the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in men's ice hockey.

We saw last year at the 4 Nations Face-Off that the intensity will be on another level. While we won't see players drop the gloves like they did last year, the competition will be off the charts.

So, with that all in mind, which team is taking home the gold in Milan?

The B/R NHL Staff got together for one final prediction on Sunday's contest.

Canada Is the Final Boss for a Reason

Ice Hockey - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 14

Before the Olympics began, I picked Canada to win gold. Now, they're in the gold medal game against the United States, and the only teams they've dominated were the ones they beat in the preliminary round.

It's been a hard road in the knockout round for Canada, and losing Sidney Crosby for at least the semifinals with an injury he suffered at the hands of Radko Gudas in the quarterfinal overtime win against Czechia didn't exactly expose any apparent weaknesses with them. Instead, coach Jon Cooper rolled out a Voltron-like line with Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Macklin Celebrini to tilt the ice in a comical way against Finland.

Don't let Canada's seemingly less-than-impressive wins on the way to the gold medal game fool you: They're still great, they're still dominating possession and shots, and they're still winning games even though they've been murder on the nerves of Canada's fans.

We know how dicey things can be with Jordan Binnington, but he continues to win and keeps making the saves needed to help them come back from deficits, and now they're winning games. That's hardened testing in this tournament, and it's the kind of thing Team USA hasn't faced up to yet. That kind of testing produces resolve, and that's why Canada will win gold again.

Prediction: Canada 4, USA 2

Team USA Produces a "Miracle" Sequel

Ice Hockey - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 14

My man Lucky and I were the only B/R pickers who forecast American gold before the tournament. So, yeah, there's no way I'll be changing course here, especially on the 46th anniversary of the "Miracle" I watched as a 10-year-old.

Team USA 2026 has gotten balanced scoring, contributions from blue liners, and reliable goaltending across five games, which is reason enough to believe it wins.

But when you factor in the chip-on-the-shoulder mentality carried as the little brother in the U.S.-Canada rivalry, it's almost academic.

The Great White North's superstars were taxed, perhaps overtaxed, in wins over Czechia and Finland, while Mike Sullivan rolled through all his lines in a walkover against Slovakia. That'll matter with a quicker turnaround before Sunday's early (in the U.S.) faceoff, leaving McDavid and Co. helpless to stop a third-period deluge.

Yes, Al Michaels. I do believe. Again.

Prediction: USA 4, Canada 1

This USA team is Different ... Or It Should Be

Ice Hockey - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 12

There are certainly some roster decisions to quibble with when it comes to this United States team, but it has been easy forget that this is still quite possibly the best men's Olympic team they have ever assembled.

It is good. Really good. It has also been dominant throughout this tournament, getting a major test only once (against Sweden in the quarterfinals).

Canada has had past success in these games, but the United States has been right there with them almost every time.

It took overtime to beat them in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. It took overtime again at the 4 Nations Face-off a year ago.

This team is better than both of those American teams, and the big advantage that it has over the 4 Nations team is the presence of defensemen Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy, the addition of Tage Thompson, and the fact that Jack Hughes and Auston Matthews are both playing at an exceptionally high level right now.

If this United States team does not get the job done, when will they ever get it done?

They have the goalie advantage, a better roster than we have seen in past tournaments, and the drive and mentality to do it. This is the year they do it.

Prediction: United States 4, Canada 3

The US Comes Home With the Gold

Ice Hockey - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 14

I originally picked the USA to take the gold. What's to stop me from changing my mind?

History does give me pause. The US has rarely beaten Canada in winner-take-all situations. Last year's 4 Nations Face-Off Final was just another example.

But this Canadian team is coming in wounded. Is Sidney Crosby healthy? And if he does suit up, how effective will the Canadian captain will be?

Meanwhile, the US has navigated adversity very well during the Olympic tournament. And Quinn Hughes is playing at a level that's otherworldly.

The pick remains the same: the US comes home with a gold medal around their necks.

Prediction: USA 3, Canada 2
