The exact 2026 salary cap figure hasn't been released yet, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported in January that the league has told all 32 teams that it's projected to be between $301.2 million to $305.7 million.
Entering Friday, the Cowboys were $30.2 million over a projected cap of $303.5 million (or roughly the midpoint of that aforementioned projected range), per Over the Cap.
By releasing Wilson, the Cowboys are now down to around $23.7 million or so over the cap.
Wilson, who turns 30 on July 8, played his first five-plus NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He amassed 100 or more tackles in each season from 2021-2024, with a high of 135 in 2023.
Wilson also had four interceptions in 2021 and 2023. He signed a four-year extension worth up to $37.25 million in Aug. 2023.
Wilson's playing time was reduced in October 2025, to the point where he played just 58 defensive snaps over a three-game stretch. He requested a trade, and Cincinnati honored it by sending Wilson to Dallas for a 2026 seventh-round draft selection.
He started one of seven games in Dallas and played around half of the defensive snaps during that time. For the whole season, Wilson had 70 tackles (34 solo) in 15 games.
