Leerdam set an Olympic record in the 1,000 meters, crossing the finish line in 1:12.31 and besting the mark by compatriot Femke Kok (1:12.59) moments earlier. It was her first taste of gold in the Olympics.
Paul, who made the trip to Italy to watch the Winter Games in person, was overcome with emotion while watching Leerdam's run unfold.
Leerdam added a silver in Sunday's 500-meter event. She briefly led the field with a time of 37.15 seconds before Kok, the three-time reigning world champion in this distance, posted a record time of 36.49 seconds.
The Dutch have dominated speed skating throughout this year's Olympics. Their eight total medals are more than twice the next closest countries. Italy and Norway each have three.
Leerdam certainly did her part to make that happen.
