Leerdam's participation in the 1000 meters in the Winter Games was uncertain after she crashed during the Dutch Olympic Trials in December. Femke Kok and Suzanne Schulting automatically qualified as the top two finishers.
The Dutch national selection committee gave Leerdam a reprieve when she was added to the team with Kok and Schulting.
Leerdam turned in one of the best performances of her life in Monday's final. The 27-year-old won gold with an Olympic-record time of 1:12.31, beating the record of 1:12.59 seconds that Kok had just set in the previous race.
Monday's win gives Leerdam two career Olympic medals. She previously won silver in the 1000 meters at the 2022 Games. The Netherlands finished in the top two spots in this event for the first time ever.
It's also the first time the Netherlands has won multiple medals in the women's 1000 meters since 2014 when Ireen Wüst and Margot Boer took home silver and bronze, respectively.
Leerdam and Paul have been dating since 2023. The couple announced their engagement in March.
