Some teams made it clear even before they could officially exercise the option that they were going to do so.

Carolina Panthers general manager Dan Morgan told reporters on Jan. 13, three days after a 34-31 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, that they were going to pick up Bryce Young's option.

"I think Bryce did a great job this year and just really excited about moving forward and him still developing chemistry with our receivers, and just the pieces around him that we had," Morgan said.

This most recent postseason really shifted narratives for the top two picks in the 2023 draft. Even though the Panthers lost in the wild card round, Young played well in the game to continue his positive trajectory since Dave Canales took over as head coach.

C.J. Stroud, on the other hand, had a disastrous postseason game with four interceptions against the New England Patriots in the divisional round. His option is still expected to be picked up by the Houston Texans, but there are more questions about his long-term outlook than it would have seemed after he won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.

The Texans have to pick up Will Anderson's option. He also seems like a no-brainer for a long-term extension this offseason if Houston wants to get a deal done early. The 24-year-old finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting to Myles Garrett in 2025 after setting career-highs in tackles for loss (20) and sacks (12).

Some of the other obvious candidates to have their options picked up include Bijan Robinson, Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jalen Carter, Jahmyr Gibbs and Christian Gonzalez.

One thing that really stands out is how strong the top of this draft looks now with three years of NFL tape to judge by. Eleven of the 31 first-round picks made at least one Pro Bowl.

The Seattle Seahawks set the foundation for their Super Bowl team this season in the 2023 draft by nailing their two first-round selections with Witherspoon and Smith-Njigba.
