Thomas Fails to Sign With Texans After Workout
Wednesday, Aug. 5
Despite having a strong workout with the Houston Texans, Thomas' agent Lamont Smith announced that his client was unable to agree to terms with the team. Despite the failure to ink a deal, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported that the two sides are likely to remain in touch and that talks "could be revisited."
On July 4, Rand Getlin of NFL.com first reported that Thomas was headed to Houston to work out for the team, who were hoping to find a solid veteran back to plug into the offense after Arian Foster suffered a serious groin injury.
The Illinois product is a dual-threat option who usually played a complementary role in the Saints offense. He racked up over 6,300 offensive yards and 30 touchdowns during his time in New Orleans and also made an impact on special teams early in his career.
His involvement dropped off last season, as he tallied just 90 total touches in 11 games. The Saints proceeded to let him go before signing C.J. Spiller to likely fill the same role.
Thomas never held the lead role for an extended stretch with the Saints—147 carries is his career high—but he's a nice secondary option for a team in need of a versatile backup back.
