Sean Payton's Future As Broncos Playcaller Detailed in NFL Rumors After Davis Webb Named OC

Adam WellsFeb 7, 2026

After recently promoting Davis Webb to offensive coordinator, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton could soon start delegating some of his responsibilities.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, people within the NFL believe that Payton will "eventually" cede offensive play-calling duties to Webb.

"Nothing has been decided as far as I understand," Fowler wrote. "And the decision will be up to Payton, who has called plays at a high level for decades. But it wouldn't be shocking if this happened gradually."

Webb, who just turned 31 on Jan. 22, received a lot of interest as a potential head coach this hiring cycle. He interviewed with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders.

Prior to being promoted to offensive coordinator in Denver, Webb received interview requests from the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants for their vacant OC positions.

The Broncos announced on Monday that Webb was being elevated to offensive coordinator. He is taking over for Joe Lombardi, who was fired two days after the team's 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Payton added Webb to his staff soon after he became Denver's head coach in January 2023. He was initially hired to be the quarterbacks coach, then added the title of offensive passing game coordinator prior to the start of the 2025 season.

Webb had never coached at any level prior to being hired by the Broncos. He was still playing in the NFL as recently as 2022, making his first career start in the season finale for the New York Giants against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Payton has been the offensive play-caller every year that he has been an NFL head coach. It's a streak that covers 18 seasons and dates back to 2006 with the New Orleans Saints.

The Broncos have a 32-19 record in three years with Payton as their head coach. They tied a franchise single-season record with 14 victories and won the AFC West this season for the first time since 2015.
