Malcolm Butler Says Robert Kraft Asked What His Name Was After Super Bowl-Winning INT for Patriots

Zach BacharFeb 6, 2026

Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler revealed that Patriots owner Robert Kraft didn't know his name following his game-winning interception against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

"My mind was everywhere, meeting new people, news reporters chasing me around. Robert Kraft asked me what was my name," Butler said during a Friday appearance on the Dan Patrick Show (1:54 mark). "I said, 'I work for you, man.'"

Butler later called Kraft the "nicest guy ever," though.

He also explained that the interaction occurred while the two were attending a Boston Celtics game shortly after the Patriots took down the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl by the final score of 28-24.

With Seattle threatening to score a go-ahead touchdown at New England's one-yard line and just under 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Butler picked off Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history.

While it's surprising that Kraft wasn't familiar with Butler, it's worth noting that he was finishing up his rookie season at the time. He started in just one of his 11 regular-season appearances and was only on the field for 25 percent of the Patriots' defensive snaps (via Pro Football Reference).

Butler went on to play three more seasons in New England, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 before spending the final three years of his career with the Tennessee Titans.

The Patriots will now be looking to secure another Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks when the two teams face off on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
