Drake Maye Shares Injury Update amid Concerns Ahead of Patriots' Super Bowl 60 vs. Seahawks
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye allayed any potential concerns about his availability for Super Bowl LX during his time with the media at Super Bowl opening night on Monday.
After being limited in practice Thursday due to a shoulder injury and missing Friday's practice with an illness, Maye suggested that he is good to go for the remainder of this week's practices and for the Super Bowl, telling reporters, "I'm feeling great. Yeah, feel good. Was out there today, got an extra day of work in of practice. And then from there, looking forward to getting back out there the next couple days."
Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, Maye said he threw as much Monday as he typically would in a "normal practice," before adding, "I think [I] turned a corner landing on the flight—felt good from the flight—and throwing out there today. I really had no doubt in being 100 percent for the game. It's the Super Bowl, you get two weeks to prepare for it. Do whatever you have to do to get it right, and I've got confidence and feel good."
In his second season after going third overall to the Patriots in the 2024 NFL draft, Maye has already established himself as the face of the franchise and one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
During the regular season, Maye led the Pats to a 14-3 record and an AFC East title, and he completed 72.0 percent of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while rushing for 450 yards and four scores.
Maye was named a Pro Bowler, Second Team All-Pro and MVP finalist, and he figures to be in a tight battle with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford for NFL MVP honors.
As easily as things seemed to come for Maye and the New England offense at times during the regular season, that hasn't been the case during the playoffs despite their run to the Super Bowl.
In three postseason games against three of the NFL's top defenses in the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, Maye has taken 15 sacks, fumbled six times and thrown two interceptions.
The Pats are averaging just 18.0 points per game in the playoffs, and that includes a pick six against the Texans and a fumble recovery against the Broncos that set the New England offense up inside Denver's 15-yard line.
Maye has taken a beating at times and it hasn't been pretty for the Patriots' offense, but their defense is allowing just 8.7 points per game, which is why they'll be playing for a championship against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
While Maye was not 100 percent healthy coming out of New England's 10-7 win over Denver in the AFC Championship Game, his comments Monday suggest he has no concerns about his status for the big game.
Maye will have another big challenge on his hands at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, though, since the Seahawks led the NFL in scoring defense during the regular season, allowing just 17.2 points per game.
