Carlos Alcaraz Makes Grand Slam History with Win vs. Djokovic in 2026 Australian Open Men's Bracket

Joseph ZuckerFeb 1, 2026

History was going to be made one way or the other at Rod Laver Arena, and Carlos Alcaraz wrote his name into the tennis record books.

The 22-year-old became the youngest men's player to earn a career Grand Slam by beating Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the 2026 Australian Open.

Alcaraz denied Djokovic a 25th career Grand Slam title, which would've moved him past Margaret Court for the most all time by a singles player. The wait will have to continue for the 38-year-old, who at least showed in Melbourne he remains capable of reaching a major final.

Alcaraz outlasted Alexander Zverev in a marathon semifinal that needed nearly five and a half hours to determine a winner. He may have been suffering from a bit of a hangover as he took the court for Sunday's final.

Djokovic won the first set with relative ease thanks to a pair of service breaks. Alcaraz committed nine unforced errors over the eight games.

Something seemed to click into gear for the Spaniard from there. The script flipped as he looked far more assured, while Djokovic was struggling to stem the tide.

Sensing the match was turning against him, Djokovic adopted a more aggressive approach. As great as the 38-year-old is for his age, he was simply no match for the younger Alcaraz.

Djokovic had enough left in the tank to keep things interest but couldn't force a decisive fifth set. At match point, Alcaraz watched a forehand from the Djoker sail long and hand him his first Australian Open trophy.

Once the curtain began closing on the Big Three era with Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, most fans probably assumed men's tennis would enter into a period of relative parity. Instead, Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have simply filled the void.

This is now the ninth straight Grand Slam in which one of the two has prevailed, and they've claimed 11 of the last 14.

The trend may carry into the next major on the schedule as Alcaraz will head into Roland-Garros as the two-time reigning champion. Should Sinner come out on top in Paris, he'll join his rival in the career Grand Slam club.
