Manchester United Transfer News: Gregory van der Wiel Fuels PSG Exit Rumours

Rory MarsdenAug 3, 2015

Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel has admitted the Ligue 1 champions are prepared to let him go this summer as he is no longer needed.

Per French outlet Le Parisien (h/t Marc Williams in the Daily Star), Dutchman Van der Wiel is eager to remain at the Parc des Princes, but the club have other ideas: "I want to stay at PSG but the club wants me to go. Things are clear."

Serge Aurier's loan deal at PSG was made permanent in April, while Marquinhos is also an option for boss Laurent Blanc at right-back, thus making the competition for places fierce.

Van der Wiel is seemingly no longer needed at PSG despite making 25 appearances during PSG's triumphant Ligue 1-winning campaign last term, per WhoScored.com.

The 27-year-old has been consistently linked with Manchester United and was reportedly offered to the Red Devils back in June for around £7 million, per the Daily Mail's Simon Jones.

However, while Van der Wiel is available for purchase—with less than a year left on his contract at PSG—United have already found themselves an eminently capable right-back in recent signing Matteo Darmian, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:

Even with Rafael da Silva set for a move to Lyon, United are likely set in the right-back position because Antonio Valencia is also more than capable in the position, as he showed for much of last season, per Samuel Luckhurst in the Manchester Evening News.

Van der Wiel will likely have plenty of suitors, though. He is a high-quality right-back, and his agent, Mino Raiola, recently hinted there are a number of parties interested in his client while reiterating Van der Wiel wished to stay at PSG, per Williams:

"

We are currently discussing for a possible extension. But we have not yet found an agreement. I hope that it will come, because there are a lot of interested clubs in England, Spain, Italy and Germany. I hope that we will get there, but we do not yet have an agreement.

"

It seems now that a new contract offer for the former Ajax man will not be forthcoming. United are likely out of the picture as a potential destination for Van der Wiel, but Serie A side Roma have also been reported as interested, per Football Italia.

It remains to be seen where the Netherlands international will end up, but his latest comments are a strong indication that Van der Wiel's days are numbered at PSG.
