Adam WellsMar 16, 2026

Christian Kirk is on the move again after agreeing to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency.

Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Kirk will sign a one-year, $6 million contract to give the Niners depth at wide receiver.

This move comes less than a week after longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Mike Evans signed a three-year, $42.4 million contract with San Francisco. With Evans and Kirk now part of the team and Brandon Aiyuk gone, here's an updated look at the team's receiving corps:

  • Mike Evans
  • Christian Kirk
  • Ricky Pearsall
  • Jordan Watkins
  • Malik Turner

Of course, the 49ers also have George Kittle—who is recovering from an Achilles injury—at tight end.

Kirk spent the 2025 season with the Houston Texans after being acquired in an offseason trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was set to be released by the Jaguars before Houston stepped in with an offer of a 2025 seventh-round pick to add him.

Last season marked the end of Kirk's four-year, $72 million contract that he originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March 2022. The deal was widely credited with inadvertently helping to elevate receiver pay across the league. Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams both got traded and signed lucrative new deals that same offseason.

Kirk played sparingly for the Texans this past season. The 29-year-old set career-lows in receiving yards (239) and yards per reception (8.5) in 13 appearances. He did save his best game for the postseason, racking up 144 yards and a touchdown on eight catches in Houston's 30-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round.

Even though things didn't work out for Kirk over the life of his contract, it started out very well. He had the best season of his career in 2022 with 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 starts to help the Jaguars make the playoffs.

At just 29 years old, Kirk is still young enough to be an effective third or fourth option in a good offense. He has been at his best operating out of the slot, so Kyle Shanahan will have to be mindful of how to deploy the Texas A&M alum.

Despite some of the limitations to his skill, Kirk is a solid buy-low addition for the 49ers in their quest to put together an offense that can get them to the playoffs next season.
